About The Dumbacher Lab
Jack Dumbacher is a PhD biologist, specializing on avian genetics, avian chemical defense, and dabbling in lots of other things related to birds and mammals. I received my undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN), my PhD at University of Chicago, and worked for several years at Smithsonian Institution with Rob Fleischer, Scott Derrickson, and others. In 2003, I became Curator of Ornithology and Mammalogy (birds and mammals) at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and I live nearby in beautiful Marin County, California.
Our lab group conducts scientific research on birds and mammals at the California Academy of Sciences and around the world. We have worked in Papua New Guinea, China, Namibia, as well in USA (mostly California and Nevada so far.) The Academy also has an amazing scientific collection of over 100,000 bird specimens, 10,000 eggs and nests, and 30,000 mammal specimens. We have an excellent staff who helps maintain the collections and do fieldwork and labwork. Much of the work is also done by a team of volunteers and also by our many field associates and collaborators.
